Yusuke Sato

CREATIVE DIRECTOR

From an early age Yusuke experienced a diversity of cultures and a curiosity to see the world. He grew up in Los Angeles and spent summers in Japan, his second home, where he listened to his grandparents' stories and wandered seamlessly through historical sites and modern cityscapes.

His creative journey began with an obsession for ceramics and spending time in the darkroom as a student at UCLA's art program — a multidisciplinary environment where he discovered artists who influenced his way of viewing images through a cinematic lens and his sensibility for composition, light, and color.

Photography as a form of documenting everyday life and the aesthetic of wabi sabi have since influenced his work in filmmaking. Today, he continues to find inspiration through traveling and working in new places, collaborating with talented artists, and embracing new avenues of expression.

Yusuke joined IATSE Cinematographers Guild in 2012, working in the camera department for movies and episodic series including Marvel’s The Defenders and The Americans on FX. Today, he’s enjoyed working on documentaries with a positive social impact including John Lewis: Good Trouble and The 1619 Project as a vérité camera operator and DP.
